Colour

As a natural product, the colour of Manuka honey can vary from batch to batch, ranging from light to dark. This variation is perfectly normal and here is no ‘golden rule’ where colour equates to quality. We share our laboratory testing certificates to ensure you have confidence in the potency and wellness properties in every jar you purchase.

Flavour

The flavour of Manuka honey can vary significantly depending on its MGO levels and UMF™ grade. Lower MGO levels and UMF™ grades typically yield a milder, more floral taste, while higher MGO levels and UMF™ grades result in a richer, more robust flavour with deeper caramel and earthy undertones.

Texture

Manuka honey’s texture and viscosity change with temperature. It becomes more runny when warm and firmer when cold. This is perfectly normal and does not affect the quality or efficacy of the honey in your jar. Our honey is creamed which also gives is a more caramel like texture at different temperatures.

FAQ

Why is this honey so expensive?

Manuka honey is more expensive than regular honey due to several key factors.

It is harvested from the nectar of the Manuka bush, which grows in remote and rugged areas of New Zealand. This makes the harvesting process challenging and costly. In some regions, it can only be collected via helicopter.

Additionally, our Manuka honey undergoes rigorous testing to ensure its quality, purity, and potency, which adds to the production costs. Before our honey can be exported to you, it must pass all the requirements stipulated by the New Zealand Government to ensure an authentic product.

The rarity of Manuka honey, as it is only produced in New Zealand, combined with its high global demand, also contributes to its higher price.

Manuka honey offers exceptional wellness benefits, including antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. These unique qualities make it highly valued for promoting overall health and wellness.

The colour of my manuka honey is very different to what I expected. Why is this?

Our Manuka honey is a natural product and can therefore change colour from batch to batch. Factors such as the location in New Zealand where the honey was harvested can influence this variation. The colour of the honey does not directly relate to its strength or efficacy; you can have a high MGO Manuka honey that is light in colour, or a dark honey with a lower MGO value.

Even when comparing a jar to one with the same UMF grading you have purchased from us before, the colour can vary.

We ensure all our honey is independently tested so you know you’re getting the very best, every time.

My honey is too hard/runny. What's wrong with it?

Our Manuka honey is creamed and will soften or harden depending on the ambient temperature. The colder it is, the firmer it will be. As it warms, it becomes more runny. If your jar has arrived from a cold delivery truck or the nose of a plane in winter, you can expect it to be harder than if it is delivered during the warm days of summer.

To soften your honey, simply leave it in a warm place in the house. To firm it up, you can store it in the fridge for a while.

If you are concerned about it being too runny, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our customer care team at hello@newzealandhoneyco.com.

My jar doesn't seem full?

Honey jars are measured by weight, not volume. We have strict quality control measures in place to ensure you receive at least the net weight stated on the jar.

Don't worry, it's all in there!

This Manuka honey tastes bitter and weird. Is it off?

Manuka honey can have a strong, distinct flavour that some may find unusual or slightly bitter, especially if it has a high MGO rating. This is a natural characteristic of Manuka honey and doesn’t indicate that it is off. It is an indicator of the potency and antibacterial nature of the honey.

You can expect it to be different from regular table honey that you may be used to.

Honey does not spoil in the traditional sense. Due to its natural composition, including low moisture content and acidic pH, it is highly resistant to bacteria and microorganisms.

Properly stored honey can remain safe and edible for years, although it may crystallise over time.

If crystallisation occurs, simply warm the honey gently to return it to a liquid state.

This new jar I bought is different to the last one I bought from you. Why?

Each batch of our Manuka honey can vary from the previous one, even if it has the same UMF grade and MGO levels.

This is perfectly normal. As a natural product, Manuka honey can differ in colour and taste due to various factors such as the location of collection, soil conditions, moisture levels, the state of the Manuka bush, altitude, and more.

It is a complex, natural product, and being 100% natural and unadulterated, you can be sure it is as pure as it was in the hive.

The texture can also change based on the temperature of the honey in the jar. The colder it is, the firmer it will be; the warmer, the runnier it will be.

All our honey is independently tested so you can have confidence in its quality, purity, and authenticity.

How is Manuka honey different from regular honey?

Manuka honey contains higher levels of methylglyoxal (MGO), which is responsible for its potent antibacterial properties. It also has a unique UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) rating that measures its quality and effectiveness. This grading system involves independent laboratory testing to ensure the active properties in the honey are as stated on the label.

What are the health benefits of Manuka honey?

Manuka honey is renowned for its antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It can aid in wound healing, soothe sore throats, improve digestive issues, and treat skin conditions. Additionally, it supports overall immune health.
