UMF™
What is UMF?

UMF™ is an independent quality mark that verifies our honey is genuine New Zealand Manuka. A higher UMF™ grade means more of Manuka's signature natural compounds.

MGO
What is MGO?

MGO is a natural compound found in Manuka Honey - methylglyoxal. The higher the number, the more concentrated the natural compounds.

Tracked & traced

From the hives to your jar.

1
Sourced from New Zealand's best beekeepers

We partner with expert beekeepers across New Zealand, chosen because they share our standards on quality and bee welfare.

2
Harvested with care

Extracted cold and unpasteurised, so the honey that leaves the frame is the honey in the jar.

3
Independently graded

Every batch is independently tested by an accredited New Zealand laboratory across the full set of scientific markers, including those required for UMF™ grading, to confirm authenticity before it earns its label.

4
Traced to your jar

The batch number on the jar pulls up that jar's own test results. Nothing to take on faith.

Accreditations & quality assurance

Trust us, you're in good hands.

These are the checks that stand between the hive and your spoon, and what each one actually proves. We only deal in real.

UMF™

The UMF™ grading system appraises natural markers found in Manuka Honey and assures purity and quality.

Why it matters

It's the clearest way to know a jar is real Manuka, and we publish the certificate for every batch.

Non-GMO

Our honey is certified and in compliance with the Non-GMO Project Standard.

Why it matters

Bees travel a long way from home, so the land around every hive is checked too, not just the honey in the jar.

Glyphosate free

Every batch of our honey is tested in independent laboratories to ensure it is glyphosate free.

Why it matters

Glyphosate is the world's most common weedkiller and it turns up in honey. We test every batch, not just a sample.

Halal

Certified by FIANZ, The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (Inc).

Why it matters

Honey shouldn't be the thing you have to think twice about. More families can share the same jar.

Fernmark

We are Fernmark accredited and approved by the NZ Government as a trusted exporter.

Why it matters

Real Manuka can only come from New Zealand, the same way Champagne only comes from Champagne.

MGO

Our independent certification shows you the exact MGO levels in our Manuka Honey.

Why it matters

MGO is the strength figure. Printing ours means you can compare our jars against anything on the shelf.

Marc and Scott, co-founders of New Zealand Honey Co.

Our story

It started with one disoriented bee.

In 2018, a disoriented bee landed in Scott Brundell and Marc Eurell's office in Mount Maunganui. They fed her, watched her lift off again, and a day later, the chance to buy New Zealand Honey Co. came up.

The Ward family had been beekeeping here since the 1930s. Scott and Marc kept their standards and added a mission: be radically transparent about every jar, right back to the hive.

Common questions

FAQs

What is Manuka Honey?

Manuka Honey is made by bees that forage on the flowers of the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), which grows wild across New Zealand. It flowers for only a few weeks each summer. What sets it apart is a set of natural compounds, led by methylglyoxal (MGO), found at levels no other honey reaches, plus a richer, earthier flavour than table honey.

What is Manuka Honey used for?

Most people take it as a daily wellness routine, a spoonful straight, stirred into warm water or tea, or over breakfast. It's also popular as a natural ingredient in skincare and haircare. Every batch of ours is tested and graded so you know exactly what's in the jar.

Why is Manuka Honey so expensive?

Three reasons. The Manuka tree flowers for only two to six weeks a year, so the harvest window is tiny. It grows in remote parts of New Zealand, so hives are often placed by helicopter. And every batch is independently tested for four natural markers before it can carry a UMF™ grade. Rarer honey, harder to collect, verified before it ships.

What does the UMF™ number actually tell me?

UMF™ checks four natural markers in the honey at an independent lab. MGO, leptosperin, DHA and HMF, so the number covers both how potent it is and whether it is genuinely Manuka. A higher number means a rarer, more concentrated honey. It is the only grading system that checks all four, which is why we print it on every jar alongside our licence number.

Is UMF™ the same as MGO?

No. MGO measures one compound, methylglyoxal. UMF™ measures that plus three other natural markers, and is backed by a licensing system with audits. The two don't convert to each other, but every UMF™ grade has a minimum MGO level. We print both numbers so you can compare our jars against anything on the shelf.

What's the difference between UMF™ 10+ and UMF™ 24+?

Concentration and rarity. UMF™ 10+ (MGO 263+) is an everyday grade with a smooth, mild flavour. UMF™ 24+ (MGO 1122+) has more than four times the MGO, a deeper, more intense taste, and comes from a much smaller share of each harvest. Both are genuine, tested Manuka, the higher grade is simply more concentrated.

How much Manuka Honey should I have a day?

There's no set amount - it's a food, so use it the way you'd use any honey. Most of our customers get through about a teaspoon a day, in tea, on toast or straight off the spoon. Higher grades are richer, so people tend to use a little less. The grade you'll actually finish is the right one.

How do I know my jar is real Manuka?

Every batch is tested by an accredited New Zealand laboratory and meets the New Zealand government's official Manuka definition before it can be exported. The lot number on your jar pulls up that batch's own results and the site it was harvested from.

How should I store it, and does it expire?

Keep it in the pantry with the lid on, no refrigeration. Crystallisation is normal and a sign of raw, unpasteurised honey; stand the jar in warm water to soften it. Each jar carries a best-before date on the base.
