Silent reflux, the silent killer
When you eat, food travels down the esophagus and into the stomach, where your gastrointestinal system begins to break it down. Your esophagus has a sphincter that kindly prevents food and stomach contents from traveling back up from your stomach to your esophagus. But sometimes, the sphincter is loose and doesn’t close properly, which allows the acidic stomach contents to leak into the esophagus, throat and larynx and cause irritation. This medical condition is known as silent reflux.
Unlike the more common condition, acid reflux, silent reflux also known as laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) doesn’t always cause symptoms, but when it does they’re so subtle you could pass it off as allergies. Whereas, if you have acid reflux, you’ll know about it. We’ve all experienced the burning sensation in the chest, the regurgitation of food or liquid in the mouth and that sour taste in the back of the throat after a hearty meal or too much of the good stuff. Acid reflux occurs when your stomach contents travel up your esophagus, but unlike its silent cousin, with acid reflux comes excessive acid, irritation and pain.
Silent reflux symptoms can be hard to pin down, what may start off as a tickle of the throat, a mild throat irritation, persistent cough, or what feels like a lump in the throat can cause long-term damage if left untreated. Without a diagnosis and treatment, those that choose to neglect their chronic symptoms could end up with life-long irritation, tissue scarring, ulcers and even lead to an increased risk of esophagus cancer. The National Cancer Institute estimated 16,130 people in the US will die from esophageal cancer this year alone. Early detection and management of silent reflux symptoms is key. A diagnosis, lifestyle changes, and plan to help prevent and manage this condition should help bring some relief.
“There were days I couldn’t even drink water, that’s when I knew something was seriously wrong.”
- Debbie
I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t drink. Some days I couldn’t even swallow water. It felt like I was swallowing razor blades. That’s when I knew something was wrong, so I booked an appointment with an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist and was diagnosed with silent reflux.
As an Italian, eating and drinking are a big part of my culture. But my silent reflux (LPR) took the joy out of that, some days I just couldn’t eat. I couldn't drink coffee at all, I couldn't eat tomatoes, and I definitely couldn't eat anything spicy. I couldn't enjoy the food that once brought me so much happiness.
My doctor wanted to put me on prescription medication, but I didn’t want that, especially long term. I didn’t want to take the risk of harming my health more by taking prescription medications. But I also felt scared, I was well aware that if I didn’t get my silent reflux under control, I could end up with esophageal cancer. I’ve always lived a healthy lifestyle, and have always leaned towards alternative medicine. I knew I had to find a better way, and I was going to find it.
Soothed by chance
“I initially bought a competitor’s brand, I didn’t notice any improvement in my reflux, but in hindsight, the strength wasn’t high enough.”
I always knew honey soothed a sore throat. So one day, out of desperation, I decided to buy a jar at my local Whole Foods. At that time, I had no understanding of MGO and UMF ratings. I purchased a competitor’s brand, it wasn't very high strength but I liked the taste of it. I didn’t notice any noticeable difference in my reflux, but in hindsight, the strength wasn’t high enough.
“I brought another product to compare, but New Zealand Honey Co. Manuka honey is clearly in a league of its own.”
I wanted more answers, so I started researching Manuka honey to see what I could learn. That’s when I came across New Zealand Honey Co. – I wanted to find a company that stood behind its product, and I was impressed with the website. So I decided to purchase one of the lower medicinal grade, the MGO 514+ to see if it worked, and if it didn’t, I’d just move on to a higher strength. Well, it did. But I still wanted to be sure your Manuka honey product was superior to what I was initially using, so I bought another product to compare, and New Zealand Honey Co. Manuka honey is clearly in a league of its own.
“If you are suffering from stomach issues or reflux you NEED this honey. It’s an alternative to prescription drugs and the taste is heavenly!”
That was 6 months ago now, and I’ve never looked back. I take my Manuka honey at least twice, if not three times a day. I found consuming a teaspoon after I’ve eaten a meal is what works best for me, I also tried taking it before a meal but that wasn’t as effective. Now that I take New Zealand Honey Co. Manuka honey for LPR, I can eat and drink all of the foods I love. I believe that this honey will be a part of my diet forever.
The development of LPR or “Silent Reflux”
LPR or silent reflux is a condition where stomach acid and enzymes travel up the oesophagus and reach the laryngopharynx region of the throat. This can affect the nose, throat, vocal cords, sinuses, lungs, and trachea. It’s called silent reflux because many people are unaware they have the condition.
“I'm not exaggerating when I say that it's changed my life. It's something that I will never stop using. I'm 71 years old and feel fantastic.”
Manuka honey has made me a changed woman
I can honestly say that New Zealand Honey Co. Manuka honey has changed my life. I'm 71 years old and I feel fantastic. I recently went to the dentist for inflammation in my gums, but after a quick check-up, he said there weren't any signs of inflammation, and that it had all gone. And whatever I was doing, I should keep doing it.
“I tell all my friends and family, and anyone that’ll listen, that they have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”
I encourage all of my friends to try New Zealand Honey Co. Manuka honey for acid reflux, stomach issues and digestive issues. I’m always sharing my story with friends and family, and anybody that'll listen. I tell them they have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. And that I'm living proof it works.
